Generally, Only use the expert salvage kit on items where you get an in-game pop up telling you that you've unlocked somthing. After a while, you'll learn what items you should salvage, for grips, blades, strings, ect. Expert salvaging for rare crafting materials isn't normally the way, you can find artisians that will take 10x Common for 1x Rare + 100 or so gold, I find it better to do it this way then chancing with an Expert Kit.

That's my understanding of it. However, you can also, supposedly, ID white items, to see if there are runes or rare crafting materials within, and then use an expert salvage kit to get them out. It's not 100%, but it increases your chances or something...

I don't know... I'm lvl 10... I just found the Iron(whatever) Caves... I'm still a n00b.

:P

I salvage all "salvage items" with the expert kit. That's how you get the rare components. Also anything I can get an upgrade component from (if I don't intend to sell the item to a player). There are also a number of normal items that salvage into rares on occasion.

Charr Hides will salvage into Tanned Hides with a regular salvage kit, and will salvage into Fur Patches with an expert salvage kit (though it's rare, something like 10% of the time... some testing has shown that it may even be less than that).

As people get more and more familiar with this game, I'm thinking a bunch of little shortcuts are going to pop up... little tricks here and there that will make our lives a LOT easier.

I hope.

(Man, there's a lot more to this game than I first thought)

I salvage anything blue, purple or yellow item with an expert kit. Remember to identify first, or you'll get jack-taco. (Sometimes I get fun stuff, sometimes I get nothing.) Either way, the 400G for the kit isn't a big cost once you've gotten to Lions Arch anyhow.

Oh, and any salvage item I zap with the expert kit. Like I said, don't always get much, but the kits isn't all the expensive anyhow.
